Cutting wood by hand. There are more modern sawmills around, but labor is certainly cheaper than the machinery and very few large trees are left to process. Commercial tree cutting was outlawed in 1989, but the law has been completely ignored, and in fact, the amount of trees cut annualy has grown each year. Penan Tribal Princess. This tribe from the Island of Borneo was famous for its headhunting. Just recently (1996), in the area where I lived, there was a 'scirmish' between people from some of the head-hunting tribes and Muslims living in the area. Quite a few Muslims lost their heads. Christian Hmong woman. Many of the Hmong hilltribe aroung Chiang Mai have been converted to Christinanity by missionaries. Sometimes the missionaries brought in medicines for the people or teachers to teach the children to give them an opportunities outside the village. Sometimes these same things were withheld from people who wern't willing to attend christian services or practice the faith, which meant abandoning there own Hmong faith. Chiang Mai, Thailand 1992
